Evaluation: Forms and Conventions

My magazine genre is “Pop and R&B” which associates with people such as Jason Derulo, Pixie Lott, Cheryl Cole, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and more. The conventions for a Pop/R&B magazine are usually quite glossy and fashion related, they follow a stylish sort of look and this reflects onto the music genre.

In these types of magazine there is usually fashion related talk, quite big fashionable photos, gig guides etc. There aren’t really that many pop and R&B related magazines around, except from maybe sugar or top of the pops. I have followed a few of the conventions from “Sugar” and “Company” and kept them the same but I have also challenged a few conventions; one being the fact that my magazine cover only has half a face and no eye-contact whereas you would usually find a whole face with eye-contact also my colours are quite bright colours but including dark colours also.

These type of magazines influenced me as they are quite bold and girly, also they look fashionable and they standout, they have bright use of colours and attract audiences quite well, also you can see that these are for a teenage girl audience, and this is also the target audience for my magazine.

Overall I quite like my front cover as it is really bold and does stand out because of the bright colours used, however if I done it again I would have perhaps used a different image, a long shot involving the whole body, this way it would have shown fashion more.

The contents page looks quite bright also, however not as bright as the cover, I think this suits the magazine because it involves similar colours and consists of the same texts but instead of having a plain white background I could have many involved a different background colour. I like the images I have used on my contents page though as they indicate a sense of fashion and music.

On my double page spread I like how there is two uses of images consisting on different shoots because it makes it look more interesting. Having the questions as headers and made bolder makes it easy to follow and easier to read. The title is bold and the colours I used really stand out and also stay with the colour scheme of my magazine. A drop cap is included to make it look more professional as in my research I noticed most magazines feature articles consist of this. I have a subheading title that introduces you to what the article is about and introducing you to this new person. I like my title because it really stands out and capture your attention but at the same time looks neat and easy to read; underlining it with a double coloured line and placing text underneath the line also makes it look so much more interesting.

I have included the website at the bottom of the page and put “for more information and the full exclusive interview visit the website” this makes it more appealing for the audience. I experimented with a few different double page spreads to try and get it how I wanted it then finally got it right.

I think that this double page spread works because there is use of formal and informal register, where the questions are asked they are answered how the artist would talk and the pictures are really eye catching and match with the colours of the text.

Originally I was going to have a photograph taking up the two pages and have text placed around the photo of the artist, however I changed my mind and had a big image consisting on one page and another image but smaller on the other, the reasons for this is because I wanted to challenge the conventions of other magazines and have mine looking newer and different, this way it is more interesting for the audiences eye.

On a whole my double page spread does what I wanted it to and connotes this glossy music/fashion magazine to create commercialisation, I think that my double page spread does challenge the conventions of a normal magazine and I like this because it means there is room for it on the market as the public audience always like something new and fresh.
