Shout is a UK magazine for teenage girls. It carries articles on fashion, celebrities, flowcharts, true stories, music, problems and embarrassing moments. It is printed fortnightly, normally at £3.00 and is read by over 520,000 people each fortnight. You can tell that shout magazine is for girls as just on the front cover it automatically draws your attention by these warm girly colours, oranges, pinks and whites. The advertisement that is on the front cover includes fashion and an extra image of some pink uggs. It has a central image of a famous music artist giving the viewer eye contact that girls would look up to, she is looking pretty, fashionable and smiling whereas if it was for a boys magazine it would be more sexual.
You can tell that this magazine is for a teenage audience because the language used like an informal slangy “you-nique” (splitting the word up incorrectly) instead on the formal usual “unique”.
Its contents page consists of the same warm girly pink yellows and whites, keeping it to a female audience throughout. On the contents page you can see that the magazine consists of things such as gossip, celebrities, embarrassing stories, dancing, problems, competitions, fashion and much more things that a teenage girl would be interested in.
Even the feature article is aimed at a teenage girl audience “ so you think you can dance?” you wouldn’t really expect a boy to want to read an article like this that is surrounded by pink colours also, in this feature article the quotes pulled out are things like “I never expected to win the show.” And “Dancing makes me feel great.” This relates to a girl and would make them want to read it more so it appeals to the magazines particular audience. The story relates to the audience and then advertises places where they can go also.
The way this magazine applies its audience, purpose, and genre throughout the magazine is by obtaining the same girly, warm colours and featuring a celebrity almost on every page, looking fashionable or simply having fashion and looks on the pages and how you can dress the same. Everything in this magazine is somehow revolved around a celebrity and is kept to a girls point of view, the language and colours used are what is most important as these are what makes it mostly girly, like saying “oh my gosh” you wouldn’t hear a boy say that because it is aimed at how a girl speaks herself, by doing this it helps the reader to be able to relate as it is how they act in their everyday life and by changing how you speak can make it apply to different types on audiences and in this magazine they make it apply to a teenage girl audience.
Even the adverts are aimed at a girl audience by advertising perfumes, make-up etc, this keeps the whole magazine girly and targets it's audience to buy the products they are advertising as they are the type of things this audience in particular would be looking for.
Every page is full, there aren’t any spaces around so this makes it look more busy and exciting, also there is lots of colour and role models are used on nearly every page, the whole magazine is made to be relatable and entertaining, this is why it is a good seller for young teenage girls.
